January

1 -  New Year's Day Junkanoo Parade - Nassau/Paradise Island
Jan 1 2008

This spectacular parade begins the Bahamian New Year with pulsating drumming, whistles, horns and cowbells. Large groups perform or “rush” in competition for first place in the parade. The groups are made up of children, adult males and females who vie for individual and group prizes in drumming, dance and belling, best costume and best float. The crowds of spectators sing and dance on the sidelines and bleachers pulling for (encouraging) their favorite group.

The groups are dressed in uniform costumes and carry large headpieces that all relate to a theme. Costumes are made out of cardboard and wire with crepe paper glued together to create a design. Larger and more elaborate costumes or pieces can be three dimensional and designed out of styrofoam. The Valley Boys, Saxton Super Stars, Roots, One Family, Barabbas & the Tribe are some of the major Junkanoo groups that have participated over the years. After the parade, everyone waits eagerly for the winners to be announced.
Tickets are available at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium two to three weeks before the parades.

18 -  Konk & Kalik

Four events during Spring Break in March

The traditional Spring Break celebration will take a step into the future, with the marriage of The Bahamas' two most enjoyable palate pleasers – our national dish, Conch ["Konk"], and our native beer, "Kalik."

The Ministry of Tourism on Grand Bahama Island and Studentcity.com, our leading spring break company, have joined forces to entertain the thousands of Spring Breakers who visit our island each year. Hence, Konk & Kalik was born to shower our Spring Breakers with “ALL” the unforgettable splendors Grand Bahama Island has to offer.

We look forward to seeing you here, because on Grand Bahama Island, we do nothing small, only GRAND!
